Kinokuniya-shoten's DVD " Sasameyuki" (1950) was released in June 30.
"Sasame-yuki" is based on Jun-ichiro Tanizaki's very famous novel (Light Snowfall aka Makioka Sisters). Kinokuniya's DVD doesn't have English sub, but if you read Tanizaki's novel first, you can follow most of the major plots in the film.
The main character in this film is different from the novel. The film focused on Tae-ko (Hideko Takamine),the youngest of the four sisters.
The director Yutaka Abe (1895-1977) moved to LA in 1912. He started working in Hollywood as an actor, and appeared in Cecil B. DeMille's famous film "The Cheat" (1915), as the valet. And he appeared some Hollywood films under the name Jack Abbe or Jack Yutaka Abbe. After returning back to Japan, his directorial debut came in 1926 with his film "Ashi ni sawatta onna aka The Woman Who Touched the Legs".
