伊藤大輔監督によるサイレント映画の名作『下郎』を、伊藤大輔自身が新たに焼き直して再映画化した戦後の代表作の1本。仇討ちを題材に取り、封建社会の主従関係の矛盾と非情さを、ギリシャ悲劇のような風格と重厚なリアリズムで鋭く描き出す。主演は田崎潤、片山明彦。身勝手な主人に見捨てられた奴（やっこ）の、虐げられた者の哀しみが怒りとなって爆発する、壮絶な血みどろのクライマックスは必見！

Japanese film director Daisuke Itou (or Ito)(1898-1981) was one of the early masters of jidai-geki (period film) ."Gerou no kubi" (55) is a remake of his own silent film "Gerou" (27) which presumably is lost. "Gerou no kubi" is a tragedy in a paternal status society.
Kinokuniya-shoten's DVD has no subs. But this DVD is valuable to all jidai-geki fans and researchers.
"Gerou no kubi" means "The Head of A Slave-like Servant". In this film, the slave-like servant named Totsu-hei(Jun Tazaki) is a loyal lance carrier who belongs to the lower class of samurai society.
He travels around with his young master Shintarou Yuuki (Akihiko Katayama) who is under strict traditional regulations, forced to revenge his dead father and keep their honor. Shintarou's father Shinbei(Minoru Takada) was a leader of his local samurai family. Shinbei is killed by one of his guests. Nobody knows who the killer is, but he has nine moles on his face. Sintarou and his Tots-hei have to find out the killer and kill him. During the long tough search, when it's rain, Totsu-hei borrows an umbrella for his sick master from a kind beautiful woman named Ichi(Michiko Saga) who is a mistress of a local authority of the art of warfare named Gansetsu Sudou (Sakae Ozawa). When Gansetsu visits Ichi's house and finds her with Totsu-hei, he misunderstands that Totsu-hei is her new lover, and tries to kill him. Totsu-hei finds out nine moles on Gansetu's face, and accidentally kills Gansetsu. But to do his family's honor, Shintarou has to kill the father's killer by himself as only son. Dishonored Shintarou begins to hate his loyal Totsu-hei, and when his own life is threatened by Gansetsu's men, he agrees with them to let them kill Totsu-hei. Shintarou traps Tosu-hei into being killed.
